prayer?
I talked crap @ 9:05 p.m. on 03.25.05
why do we have prayer? why does prayer exist. more what i want to know; why is it good? to me, prayer seems almost like a display of lack of faith. perhaps similar to the chosen people hording manna in the desert. for anyone to truly believe that prayer works, one must also belive that god is both omnipotent, and omniscient; that is, all powerful, and all knowing. why then, is it necessary for us to tell god what he should do, or even ask him to do things for us.
as i think about this more, i realize that there are many kinds of prayer. prayers of thanks, and others. still, as far as i can understand, a lot of prayer is asking god to do stuff. obviously if god is omniscient, he knows what you want at all times, and, presumably, he would fulfil your wishes according to his plan. if god has a plan, and thats the way its going to be, no amount of prayer is going to change that plan. conversely, if, as some people belive, god is a more "hands-off" god (deism) then asking god to do something would be futile, because he is hands off. as i see it, the best that prayer amounts to is a needy child. god knows what you want, and if he wants to do it, he will. i dont really understand why i need to remind him what i want, and how this is good. the only good form of prayer that i can see is prayer of thanksgiving.
if anyone has any insight into my quandry, that would be cool
